Learning psychologists have developed methods to improve reading or learning skills for rapid learning or rapid reading. They introduced a method called Survey Q 3R. Here Survey stands for survey, Q stands for questioning and 3R stands for reading, reviewing and restating. Before we read or before we start reading any article or essays or book, we first should survey the reading material. How to survey the reading material like an essay or an article or a whole book is a first suitable question. Or how to do rapid and effective reading is a suitable question of many readers or students or college and university students. This is the super reading technique. Still some modification can be done based on the availability of time and purpose of the reading.

Survey
In the method of Survey Q 3R, survey of an article or an essay stands for exploring mini topics of the article or essay that consists of. Survey of a book stands the chapters the particular book consists of. How to survey the article or essay or the book is also a good step to understand. Reading first line of each paragraph of the article or essay is the first step of the survey.

You can also make guess that the article or essay consists of the some of these points too. If you are surveying a whole book, you can see the table of contents of the book. You can also anticipate some contents of the book when you catch any book before you see the table of contents. These steps are under the process of ‘survey’.

The reading technique varies based on the reading material. If you are reading a chapter of a economics, you better attack on graphs, examples , data in tables and illustrations in the survey step. You should develop the skill of scanning those sections in the chapter and paragraphs where there are. Are you worried that it's so difficult to scan so many things while reading. It's not difficult. It's very easy.

Don't get worried. Feel you are smart in doing these things. This sort of scanning makes your mind receptive, curious, alert, quick and help acquire many other useful skills of the real readers' as well as college students' to grasp the information effectively. By the way, what do you mean that you have learned something? I assume that you have learned if you can express or explain the understood matters using illustration, graphs and examples. Questioning
After we complete survey step of the rapid and effective reading, the questioning (Q) step starts. Before you start reading; in the questioning (Q) step, start questioning or making questions that the particular essay or article of the book will try to answer. Your question step will raise your interest to understand the important message in the article. These questions are the real stimulants of the rapid and effective reading step. Questioning makes you ready to start reading.

Reading
Reading is like eating bread, chewing, macerating it with the saliva, swallowing the food colloid, digesting the food and absorbing the digested food materials. So; for the huge work of the real ‘reading’, we must be ready for rapid reading as well as effective reading. In essence, reading is like digesting food. While reading, I advice not to produce sound. Or in other words, don’t make lip movements while reading.

While reading, it is assumed that you are memorizing most important points of each paragraph of the article or essay or the book. The main points can also be recorded in a sheet of white stationary if you are in your reading room. But, to solve comprehension questions in the examination, you won’t get the opportunity to note the important points while reading. Practice of making points in the mind and logically movement towards the terminal section of the article or essay or book is also the important requirement. In the earlier days, you are slow. But; as you read adopting the technique of rapid and effective reading, you will slowly raise the speed of the reading.

Review
For rapid and effective reading, remember the main points logically and in the appropriate sequence after the reading. To remember all main points of the read articles, you must have sequential logic. Otherwise it is very difficult to memorize all the main points sequentially. You must have precise logic to link the sequential logic to link the main points. For it, you have to think and go under the process of imagination. Once you start to create and establish sequential logic to link the sequential main points with the help of your imagination, your right brain starts participating for the long term memory which will help you keep the main points into the long term memory.

Please remember that short term memory remains in left brain and long term memory remains in the right brain. Since the right brain has 90% capacity to store information whereas left brain has less than 10% storage capacity. So, I mentioned the information to make you careful. And I also insist you practice in this way in the review step of the survey Q 3R.

You can note down all the main points of the articles or chapters or essays. Repeat the practice of memorizing the main points as many times as possible in order to memorize them in shorter and shorter time duration. While memorizing main points, make no lip movements. In other words, don’t produce sound while memorizing the main points sequentially.

When you start feeling that you remembered all the main points logically and sequentially, you will start feeling better. The better feeling will generate confidence. The confidence will help you regenerate internal energy and will power. The expressed internal energy and will power will again engender internal talent and make you feel extraordinary. These expressions will make you smiling and brighter to go ahead.

Some time, very complex points are made in simpler form too. Don’t feel the important points are very complex. Make the main points as simple as possible. I want to illustrate the method of making complex points into simpler main points and a way to memorize the points. For example; for the agricultural development of a country, there must be marketing facilities, transportation facilities, good price of the agricultural products, high yielding technology, supply of necessary inputs, availability of credit, and irrigation facility. These are the important points we can note after reading a chapter of economics of agricultural development of any country. But, we can modify complex points into simpler. “My father planted high yielding potato taking loan and using good seeds, applying fertilizers, and irrigating and earned profits selling the products taking them to the market.”

This inverted comma closed single sentence has almost all the points what I noted earlier. We can see those silent points here. “My father planted high yielding potato variety (technology) taking loan (credit from financing institute), using good seeds, applying fertilizers (availability of seeds, fertilizers, chemicals), and irrigating (irrigation facilities) and earned profits (good price of the agricultural products) selling the products taking them (efficient transportation facilities) to the market (availability of good market).” If you practice applying special efforts, you can still make simpler than this one I made here. I made this just to explain how difficult main points are embedded into a simple sentence. This way, you can memorize many points very easily and with sequential logic. These activities are under the review step of the rapid and effective learning.

Let me illustrate another example to pack the main points you extracted reading the chapter. Who doesn’t want to be a millionaire? Who don’t have the question, “How to become a millionaire?” Who doesn't speak, "I want  to be a millionaire." This question is exciting question for us. To embed all the main points, I make a sentence here “I a millionaire from the sale of the bumper harvest of the capsicum cultivation."

To become a millionaire from the bumper harvest of capsicum, I must have a piece of land, some money. If money is lacking, I must get loan easily from a bank. I must sow the seeds of a high yielding hybrid variety of the capsicum. I must simultaneously use ample fertilizers. Then, I must irrigate the crop. After the maturity of the crop, I must carry the bumper harvest to the market and must get good price of my produce.

In the precise sentence; “I became a millionaire (1) from the sale (2) of the bumper harvest (3) of the capsicum cultivation (4),” main points are embedded in it. The main points of the marketing facilities (3), transportation facilities (3), good price (1) of the agricultural products, high yielding technology (3), supply of necessary inputs (4), availability of credit (4), and irrigation facility (4) are embedded in the numbered word or group of words.

It’s okay. We arrived at a moment that we acquired the skill to pack many important points in a single sentence. Simultaneously we acquired to extract many points from a single sentence too. Furthermore, we are practicing to concentrate our mind onto a single sentence. Here we extracted the main points again and practiced to concentrate our attention to the target. This way, we acquired an extraordinary trait to focus our attention to a target passage for comprehension. The terminal fraction of the review also help  concentrate attention while reading.

Restate
Express the points orally so as to make it your own good article. Repeat the practice of the restate using transitional expressions. I have written a page of transitional expressions.
